Chile is so long, it's curved How long is it? Why not longer? Why no other country is as long? How does that make Chileans incomprehensible? A thread about Chile and its humongous length 🧵

SummaryChile is extraordinarily long (stretching from the equator nearly to Antarctica) because it's a narrow strip of land between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains, shaped by tectonic plate subduction. The country's extreme length, combined with its isolation by mountains and ocean, explains why most Chileans live in the temperate middle section and why they speak a distinctly different form of Spanish. No other country is as long because this specific geographic configuration—an oceanic plate subducting under a continental plate far from the equator—is rare globally.Jun 30, 202424 tweets♥ 18.1K
