Summary

A user advocates for the American Black Bear as the mascot for the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) instead of the Bison, citing its endemic North American range, symbolic associations with protection and independence, lack of use by other US parties, and cultural significance to indigenous peoples.

I like the Bison suggestions, but let me throw in for the American Black Bear Bigger historic range in America, somehow no US party has ever used a bear, and it's a nice symmetry with the Soviet Brown Bear and China's Giant Panda People love bears, I love bears! (🧵 1/2)

DSA needs to find an animal to symbolize itself with like the GOP/Dems

My case for the Black Bear as DSA's mascot: There's real utility in choosing a beloved mascot, there's ample media to play off of and a lot of associations to use Donkeys and elephants aren't even native to the Americas, but the Black Bear is endemic (only found in North America) and coast-to-coast There's the European bison that looks almost identical, but no bear like our Black Bear. The Moon bear (Asian black bear) looks different! Powerful like the bison, and a symbol of protection and adaptability. Where bison are herd animals (ie cattle), Black Bears are independent but very maternal and nurturing. Clever too! Not evocative of the Bull Moose like the Bison might be, and an aggressive contrast to an Elephant and Donkey. To my surprise, not even a Canadian party uses a bear! (They stick with typography and the one leaf) Like I said, the USSR is closely associated with the Eurasian brown bear and China is basically defined by the Giant Panda. The symbolism of the bear is tied closer to communism than any animal! Both have deep indigenous symbolism too, the Bison as the Provider, the Black Bear as the Healer and Guardian Basically I think picking a loved cute animal with fun gifs is a better strategy than the one farmed in the US and known primarily for being killed en masse with a large pile of skulls being their most famous photo.

No hate though I love bison, I just like bears more. Bear Down! Also shoutout Cali DSA and Asheville NC DSA, like I said, coast to coast!
