Summary

A self-taught artist breaks down how to replicate the artstyle of Danganronpa Another and Super Danganronpa Another 2, covering proportions (larger hands, heads, eyes, longer torsos), lineart techniques, clothing folds, color theory with saturated tones, shading methods, and specific details like salmon-colored mouths and iris outlines.

    How I replicate the DRA/SDRA2 Artstyle!! A 🧵

  2. #2

I would like to first give a warning that I am not a professional, I am a self taught artist, I do not consider my skills perfect, Please do not treat this as gospel and as the only right way to draw in LINUJ's artstyle. Also english isnt my first language..

  3. #3

It's easy to understand Another's artstyle by comparing it to the official games; Usually in SDRA2 Characters have bigger hands*, heads, feet, noses and eyes, longer torsos, smaller knees and wider hips

  4. #4

The hands are small in some cases, but usually are not. The finger tips are sharply ended and the hands are not as detailed as in the original games. Also eyelashes are stockier

  5. #5

In both games the girls' busts are a more realistic teardrop shape, while in the Canonronpa they are circle-shaped and appear smaller even if both characters have the same chest measurments

  6. #6

I Drew the guidelines of Yoruko's anatomy (Eyes, nose, chin, shoulders, bust, crotch, knees, ankles) so it would be easier to adjust Chiaki's proportions

  7. #7

A really important thing you need to have are references!!! A lot of those. Since I first did Chiaki in SDRA2's style I picked Teruya, Iroha and Setsuka for similiar haircut, Kokoro, Kanade, Yuri, Sora and Kizuna for the outfit and overall anatomy.

  8. #8

While drawing the sketch I follow the guidelines and look at the references, the brush you use doesn't matter here too much

  9. #9

The brush I use for lineart is Clip Studio Paint's Deafult Mapping pen; basically a sharp-ended brush with high pen pressure sensitivity. Instead of making the brush finer for details I just apply less pressure.

  10. #10

If you are unable to have pen pressure then you can just go over your lines a couple of times to make them thicker or thinner. The lineart doesn't need to be squeaky-clean, I don't even use stabilizer, your lines don't need to be perfect

  11. #11

The clothing folds in SDRA2 Are the shape of a nike logo, and the outer lineart of clothes is usually kinda angular and boxy. The amount of detail in the hair's lineart depends on the character, but a trait they share is a zig-zag shaped hair parting.

  12. #12

SDRA2 Has saturated colors compared to Canonronpa (saturated but not neon), the skin usually has a very subtle gradient on the face.

  13. #13

Looking at the characters with a lighter skin, their skintone has a pinkish tone, while skintones of the darker-skinned characters goes more into the yellows. All characters' blushes are a salmon/red color instead of pink

  14. #14

The shadows are usually the same hue as the base, but darker and higher saturation. I almost never put all of the shadows on one layer, make them one color and set the layer on multiply, I pick the shadow colors myself and they are all on different layers

  15. #15

And If a character isn't wearing something with a low neckline (like Syobai, Yoruko, Hajime, Shinji) their neck is almost completely covered in shadow that's coming from the right

  16. #16

Sometimes, but not always a highlight is added to things like accessories, shoes or skirts; Simply a color lighter in value than the base.

  17. #17

Metal jewelry (and Emma's hair), they are shaded with an airbrush (Or a softer, semi transparent brush) with a really light and saturated highlight color, and a really dark and also saturated shadow color. After that, using both shadow and highlight colors you add fine strokes

  18. #18

Chiaki has neither of these but I feel like it's important to mention that you do not need to use references for things like curly hair or ruffles/frills. Just do them by your instinct, it's inaccurate to reality but accurate to the duology

  19. #19

Characters in SDRA2 Don't have the watercolor paper texture with the exception of Iroha and Yoruko. However, it's fairly common for them to have a perlin noise texture on one or two parts of them.

  20. #20

Mouths always have a salmon/light red color, and it's rare for them to have a finished lineart. When a character opens their mouth wide enough, the bottom row of their teeth might show up (usually happens to show strong emotion)

  21. #21

Remember to color the iris' outline!!!!

  22. #22

    Yay. It's A chiaki

Okay DRA Thread I do the same process as before. The things that are more of less the same are the longer torsos, chins and busts, smaller knees, bigger hands and feet, but the noses are smaller, eyes are a smiliar size to Canonronpa and the shoulders are usually kinda slouched
