1. Here's a 9/11 story you won't hear today, and it happened seven months ago. The health program that keeps 9/11 responders alive was headed for a $3 billion shortfall. In February, President Trump signed the fix. Funded through 2090. Nobody covered it. 🧵

2. Background. The World Trade Center Health Program covers more than 135,000 people from all 50 states. Monitoring, treatment, cancer care. It was created in 2010 and reauthorized in 2015. But the funding formula was built on the old math, and enrollment and costs kept climbing.

3. By 2022 it was public: a $3 billion hole over ten years. Services would have started getting cut within three years, and the program would have stopped taking new members. Meaning a firefighter diagnosed with cancer in 2027 gets told there's no room.

4. Congress tried in 2021. Nothing. Tried again in 2023, got a patch. In December 2024 the fix was actually in the year-end bill, and then it got stripped out at the last minute. The responders watched Washington drop them one more time and went home.

5. Then on Feb. 3, 2026, the House locked in the allocation and Trump signed it. The formula is now tied to actual enrollment. Funded through 2090, which is past the lifespan of everyone it covers. It was bipartisan and it finally got done under this President.

6. I bring it up today because of the numbers we learned this week. 453 FDNY members dead from Ground Zero illnesses, more than the 343 killed that morning. Over 6,000 dead from 9/11 illnesses total. That program is not charity. It's the bill for a promise we made. It's paid now.

7. So when somebody tells you today that "never forget" is just words, tell them about February 3rd. The men who ran up the stairs will get their care for as long as they need it. That's what keeping a promise looks like, and it took 25 years. 🇺🇸🙏
