Summary

Women's Rights Network (WRN) successfully pressured Gwent Police to withdraw an unlawful policy that allowed male officers to use female workplace facilities, forcing compliance with the law through legal threats. The police force backed down rather than defend the policy in court, though WRN warns they will continue monitoring to ensure facilities remain legally compliant and protect the privacy and dignity of female officers and staff.

AN UPDATE: You may remember that we had to threaten a police force with legal action to get them to comply with the law. We are pleased to tell you that @gwentpolice state that they have withdrawn their unlawful policy of allowing male officers use female workplace facilities. They have chosen to withdraw the policies rather than attempt to defend them in court. 1/ 🧵 dailymail.com/news/article-1…

The climbdown by @gwentpolice actually came hot on the heels of our letter before action to them. However, it took several more communications before they would confirm that, as well as the withdrawal of their unlawful policy, all workplace facilities were now legally compliant. As Cathy told the @DailyMail's Rebecca Camber: “It beggars belief that a police force has to be prompted not to break the law” 2/

GWENT POLICE ARE BREAKING THE LAW A police force is openly admitting, 11 months after the Supreme Court judgment that they are continuing to allow men into women’s changing rooms and toilets. They are STILL telling their staff that this is an 'entitlement'. They are wrong. We’d like to know what the Chief Constable and PCC of @gwentpolice will do about this flagrant breach of the Workplace Regulations 1992. 1/

We encourage any female police officers or staff at @gwentpolice to let us know if they are flouting this. We'd be delighted to take action in the face of such flagrant disregard for the law - and for the brave women who serve there. Female officers deserve privacy and dignity at work and WRN will continue to hold every police force to account until that is guaranteed. 3/

In the meantime, @gwentpolice tell us that they are planning a new workplace facilities policy "subject to consultation with our workplace representative groups". So this may not be over yet. Rest assured though, @WRNWales will be watching! “How can women trust a police force like Gwent when they claim to take their safety, and violence against women and girls seriously, when they don't respect the legal rights of their own female officers and staff?” 4/4
