Summary
Comprehensive FPL pre-season planning guide covering best fixture rotations, wildcard/bench boost windows, DEFCON (defensive) assets and opponents, consistent performers, and bonus point magnets for GW1-19. Key recommendations include targeting Man United and Liverpool's opening runs, exploring the £5m defender bracket with players like Vuskovic and Muharemovic, and identifying DEFCON midfielders in the £6m range like Sangare who offer both defensive and attacking returns.

To start off, I’ll go through each graphic in the thread and add some additional notes! 👉🏻Best Fixture rotations GW1-10 Immediately I’m drawn to rotating defenders and these particular combos: Favourites • Vuskovic + Thomas • Van Hecke + Canvot • Ballard + Thiaw Cheapest (less DEFCON emphasis) • Kayode + Mykolenko • Kadoiglu + Van Ewijk • Mitchell + Robertson • Robinson + Davis Fixture rotations often split opinions. You can start the blank and bench the haul quite easily! But I think it’s nice to have the option in smaller cases, especially if it’s to save budget or target specifically nice home fixtures! *Note: All the fixture ratings in this thread have been made using a custom FDR. It combines both the bookies seasonal odds + each team’s home and away record last season.

👉🏻Best fixture runs Moving on to the very best fixture runs on paper in the first half of the season (GW1-19). Whilst this isn’t completely directed at GW1, I like to use this guide to plan accordingly around target runs. In particular just how highly Man United and Liverpool’s opening runs rank across the entire first half of the season. Straight from the off these teams have two of the very best available runs to target before Christmas, so perhaps it shouldn’t take much thinking to invest highly to begin with!

👉🏻Possible wildcard + bench boost windows Worth noting each window here is simply based off the fixtures in that period. So WC5 can easily be WC4 or WC6! BB16 + WC17 looks the best by some distance to me. The only issue is a lot of us won’t make it that far without activating! It could pay off quite handsomely to anyone that does manage to make it! This season we don’t have too many significantly obvious fixture runs or swings. But there are some nice target areas here and the swings around GW5 will likely be the most popular

👉🏻DEFCON Leaders: Defence Immediately the £5m bracket looks like the sweet spot this season. So much potential there! A lot of the big DEFCON hitters from last season have either changed clubs or changed managers. So perhaps the way forward this year is to gamble on potential new DEFCON gems! Vuskovic + Muharemovic boast impressive DEFCON numbers and attacking data from their previous clubs. This may not translate to FPL but it might be worth just taking that gamble for the huge potential upside! Especially with an early WC as cover, which most will likely use anyway.

👉🏻 Which defenders had the highest floor score last season? An important consideration within the DEFCON era. Players may hit DEFCON a lot but if they concede significantly or get booked a lot, it slowly loses its value! 4+ points is the dream target for all defenders. Either a simple clean sheet, attacking return or DEFCON with just one goal conceded. Ballard + Bijol with quite remarkable numbers from last year, particularly in home games! (One to consider if you’re doing a home game rotation) The Bournemouth defence was ridiculously consistent across the board. But this one maybe needs a bit of time to see how the new manager gets on!

👉🏻 Defenders who hit DEFCON whilst keeping a clean sheet One of the more underrated considerations for players. Some players may rarely actually hit DEFCON in the games where they defend the strongest, as you’d naturally expect. Ballard + Bijol again ticking a lot of boxes. They racked up the DEFCON quite regularly even when keeping clean sheets! The ones to watch for me are the Forest assets. We all know how amazing they would have been for DEFCON the year before last! If they improve defensively under Glasner then we could be looking at some big DEFCON numbers combined with clean sheets!

👉🏻 DEFCON leaders: Midfield DEFCON midfielders perhaps go under the radar a bit more than the DEFCON defenders. But if you get a player that can get you a fair share of both attacking returns + DEFCON, you have a very consistent source of points! The £6m bracket is stacked. Garner would be the perfect GW1 pick if not for his injury! The combination of both here resembles great value that you know you can somewhat count on before a ball is kicked. Stach and Le Fee are the other two that catch the eye to begin with, they just cover so many avenues to points at the bracket, especially with both having their share of set pieces. Incidentally, Sangare (£5.5m) who recently joined Brentford, had a whopping 65% DEFCON hit rate at his previous club Lens. He also chipped in with 7 attacking returns. If he even remotely replicates this then he could become one of the best value picks in the game, much like Elliot Anderson last season.

👉🏻Which midfielders had the highest floor score last season? It’s nice to see here how the DEFCON picks compare to the best premium attacking midfielder from last season, on a consistency basis. The big hitters will get bigger hauls. But the DEFCON guys can rack up very consistent small returns. Sangare (Brentford) was incorporated into this chart after his move and you can see how highly he would have ranked with his DEFCON numbers last season. Anton Stach standing out as amazing value once again. Granit Xhaka also with very respectable numbers at the price point and not in many teams.

👉🏻Best DEFCON opponents: CB and CM/DM This is a reasonable way to identify particular fixtures which you can always play your DEFCON guy in, and they have a great chance of hitting the threshold. A good number of teams have changed managers in the summer. But in particular the CB side, a large amount of the best DEFCON opponents do still have their manager. The biggest standout was that every Brighton home game until GW15 is against one of the top DEFCON opponents for CBs. Also Everton play both the best opponents for midfield DEFCON (Man United + Spurs) in GW3 + GW4. These two less appealing fixtures are sandwiched in between a very nice run of games, meaning all the opening games seem viable for their midfield picks!

👉🏻Which players hit bonus points the most whilst hitting just one return? Anyone can hit bonus with 2+ returns, but a likeliness of hitting bonus in the single return games really extends the value of an option! A return counted here as one of: Goal, assist, clean sheet, penalty save Strikers generally do well in the bonus with just one goal, but Igor Thiago is one that does particularly badly (fouls, misses, penalty goals) Defenders generally share the bonus with other defenders when they keep a clean sheet, so it’s tough for them to consistently rack up bonus. Neco Williams + Truffert being quite impressive cases here Wirtz, Bruno G with impressive numbers here. They often hit bonus with one return and it’s often higher than 1 bonus (far right column). Ampadu with some fantastic consistency at just £5.5m, albeit a small sample size of returns. Cunha incredibly consistent for bonus given the vast amount of single returns he had! Bruno Fernandes and Rice both are superb in the bonus. But they just didn’t necessarily hit bonus each time they got a single return. But when they did it was very often more than just 1! (Bruno also had loads of games with 2+ returns last year)
