The Culturist@the_culturist_Reminder: Tolkien hated Disney. He called them "hopelessly corrupted" and knew they'd ruin any story they touched. Why? Tolkien's storytelling philosophy was profoundly different… (thread) 🧵 https:...
SummaryThis thread explores Tolkien's deep antipathy toward Disney, rooted in fundamentally different philosophies about storytelling. While Disney stripped folklore of spiritual depth and moral complexity to create sanitized entertainment, Tolkien believed myths were sacred vessels of divine truth that should retain their rough edges, danger, and existential weight to convey essential human truths.Mar 28, 202514 tweets♥ 68.3KThe Culturist@the_culturist_Every aspect of life is being stripped of color. Many have noticed this trend — but why exactly is it happening? Something deeper is going on… (thread) 🧵
SummaryA thread explores why color is disappearing from modern life—80% of new cars are now grayscale, film uses muted color grades, and brands adopt neutral palettes. The shift stems from Western philosophy's prioritization of form over sensory experience (dating back to Plato), modernism's extreme rationalism, and commercial incentives to appeal to the broadest possible audiences without offending anyone.Feb 19, 202517 tweets♥ 77.8KThe Culturist@the_culturist_This mosaic is the biggest discovery since the Dead Sea Scrolls. The earliest "Jesus is God" declaration from 230 AD — and it's just the start of what we've found. Mega thread of archaeology that su...
SummaryA thread discussing archaeological discoveries that support the historical accuracy of the New Testament, including the Megiddo Mosaic (declaring "God Jesus Christ" from 230 AD), evidence for biblical figures like Pontius Pilate and Caiaphas, and confirmation of locations mentioned in the Gospels such as Nazareth, the Pool of Bethesda, and the Pool of Siloam.Feb 13, 202517 tweets♥ 93.7KThe Culturist@the_culturist_Is this the image of Jesus? There's a lot of talk about the Shroud of Turin lately, so let's break down the evidence. A new X-ray study suggests it's 2,000 years old — but that's just the beginning....
SummaryA detailed examination of the Shroud of Turin—claimed to be Jesus's burial cloth—presents scientific puzzles: the image is impossibly precise and shallow (200-500 nanometers), contains 3D information and photographic-negative properties that couldn't be replicated with known technology, and shows details consistent with crucifixion including rare AB-type blood and Middle Eastern pollen. While 1988 carbon dating suggested a medieval origin (1260-1390 AD), a 2022 X-ray study of cellulose breakdown indicates the linen is approximately 2,000 years old, creating a significant discrepancy that remains unexplained.Jan 21, 202524 tweets♥ 40.5KThe Culturist@the_culturist_The 12 Apostles risked their lives to spread Christianity across the globe. SummaryA historical overview of the fates of the 12 Apostles, most of whom were brutally martyred for spreading Christianity across the Roman Empire and beyond. Only John died of natural causes, while the others faced crucifixion, beheading, flaying, and other violent deaths as they traveled and preached across the ancient world.Jan 15, 202518 tweets♥ 66.5KThe Culturist@the_culturist_This is what angels look like according to the Bible. A thread explaining the 9 types, and why they say when they appear: "Be not afraid"... 🧵
SummaryThis thread explains the 9 types of angels described in the Bible, organized into three orders by theologian Aquinas. The lowest order includes regular angels and archangels that interact with humans, while the highest order consists of otherworldly beings like Seraphim (with six wings and eyes) and Cherubim (with four faces and wings), which explains why angels often say 'Be not afraid' when appearing to people.Jan 9, 202522 tweets♥ 49.4KThe Culturist@the_culturist_Ancient Greek thinkers like Socrates and Plato hated democratic elections. SummaryAncient Greek philosophers like Socrates and Plato distrusted pure democracy, viewing it as destined to descend into mob rule and tyranny. However, Polybius proposed a solution: mixing elements of monarchy, aristocracy, and democracy through separation of powers—a principle that influenced the design of the American government and can be stabilized through education.Nov 1, 202413 tweets♥ 46.6KThe Culturist@the_culturist_This painting by Caravaggio, Master of Light, is one of the most revolutionary in history. SummaryThis thread explores Caravaggio's masterpiece 'Supper at Emmaus' and how his revolutionary use of light and hidden symbolism—including fish symbols representing Jesus—create a painting where viewers must actively choose to see and believe. Every detail from the positioning of the table to the fruit on it carries spiritual significance about the revelation of the risen Christ to his disciples.Oct 15, 202416 tweets♥ 24.8KThe Culturist@the_culturist_You haven't seen complexity in art until you've seen this 600-year-old painting. SummaryA detailed analysis of Jan van Eyck's 1436 painting reveals extraordinary complexity: doctors have diagnosed the commissioner's temporal arteritis through painted symptoms, the entire scene appears to be the man's meditative vision, and van Eyck included a microscopic self-portrait in armor reflection positioned exactly where he wants viewers to stand for optimal immersion.Oct 2, 202419 tweets♥ 30.1KThe Culturist@the_culturist_Today is Michaelmas — the Christian festival honoring the Archangel Michael. SummaryA line drawn across Europe connects seven medieval monasteries and sanctuaries dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, stretching from Ireland to Israel. According to legend, this "St. Michael's line" represents the arc of the archangel's sword as he defeated Satan, though the alignment is only approximate and may be coincidental.Sep 29, 202420 tweets♥ 30.9KThe Culturist@the_culturist_This 500-year-old portrait may seem ordinary, but it's one of the most mysterious in history. SummaryHans Holbein's 500-year-old painting "The Ambassadors" is packed with hidden symbolism and detail, from celestial and earthly instruments representing human knowledge to a hidden skull rendered in anamorphic perspective and a concealed crucifix that suggests spiritual truth transcends material pursuits. Every element—the broken lute string, Martin Luther hymnal, specific astronomical date of Good Friday 1533, and even the near-perfect square composition—carries deliberate theological meaning about mortality, the Reformation, and the limits of earthly knowledge.Sep 24, 202420 tweets♥ 89.9KThe Culturist@the_culturist_This 600-year-old painting is one of the most mysterious in history. SummaryJan van Eyck's 15th-century painting of Giovanni Arnolfini is filled with astonishing micro-details and hidden symbols that reveal it's actually a posthumous tribute to his wife Costanza, who died in childbirth the year before—with every element from the burned-out candle to tiny Passion of Christ scenes carefully encoding this tragic story. The convex mirror's reflection, miniature details painted with single brushstrokes, and symbolic objects create one of art history's most complex and emotionally layered compositions.Sep 3, 202417 tweets♥ 248KThe Culturist@the_culturist_Is this the image of Jesus of Nazareth? SummaryNew X-ray analysis suggests the Shroud of Turin is 2,000 years old, contradicting a 1988 carbon dating study that placed it in medieval times. The cloth displays mysterious properties including a photographic negative image with no pigment, accurate depictions of Roman crucifixion wounds, and physical evidence consistent with trauma, though its origin and the method of image creation remain scientifically unexplained.Aug 21, 202420 tweets♥ 145KThe Culturist@the_culturist_On this day in 1880, Cologne Cathedral was finally completed — 632 years after work began. SummaryCologne Cathedral took 632 years to complete (1248-1880) because it was built to house the relics of the Three Wise Men, believed to have been brought to Cologne in 1162. The project symbolized medieval faith and later German unity, and the reliquary still contains remains—including three crowned skulls—that may date back 2,000 years, though their authenticity remains debated.Aug 14, 202416 tweets♥ 65KThe Culturist@the_culturist_Today in 1521, Spanish forces captured Tenochtitlan (Mexico City), thus ending the Aztec Empire. SummaryOn this day in 1521, Spanish forces conquered Tenochtitlan, the magnificent Aztec capital of 200,000+ people built on Lake Texcoco, which practiced large-scale human sacrifice to appease their sun god. The Spanish dismantled the great temple and built Mexico City anew, transforming it into a baroque and neoclassical marvel that became known as the 'City of Palaces.'Aug 13, 202416 tweets♥ 76.8KThe Culturist@the_culturist_
